All the Information you need . . . and probably more
Can my child attend more than one week at Earthworks?
Your child can attend as many weeks as you like. Each week will hold some new activities, as well as some that we think are important enough to have every week.
How will my child be grouped?
Children are placed in groups by age, with usually 7-8 children in each group. If your child wants to be in a group with a particular other child, please let us know, and we will try to accommodate your request. We cannot guarantee pairings. But please keep in mind that because the groups are small, children make friends easily. Sometimes it’s better to allow a child to be slightly uncomfortable for a little while in order to make a new friend.
How should my child dress for Earthworks?
Our programs go on—rain or shine. So be sure that your child is dressed for whatever type of weather is predicted. Note also that we do not allow children to wear sandals. This is because there are too many possibilities for infection and injury around animals and their droppings, and because sandals do not hold up well to the hiking and outdoor activities of the program.
What if my child is frightened on the first day?
Our staff is experienced with frightened and homesick children. It is best to bring your child, assuring him/her that s/he will feel much better once the day has started.
What if my child is too sick to come to Earthworks?
We would be grateful for a phone call in the morning. If we don’t hear from you, we will call you to check on your child’s absence. We do not give refunds for sick days.
What happens if my child doesn’t feel well while s/he is at Earthworks?
On our health form, we ask you to tell us what you do at home for simple ailments like a headache or an upset stomach. We will follow your lead, and also encourage your child to lie quietly for a time if s/he doesn’t feel well. If your child has a fever, or is more than mildly uncomfortable, we will call you or your alternate to collect the child.
What happens if my child has a medical emergency while at Earthworks?
In a true medical emergency, we will call an ambulance immediately, and go with your child to the nearest hospital. We will contact you or your alternate immediately.
What if my child has to take medication while s/he is at Earthworks? IMPORTANT
If your child needs to take prescription medication while s/he is at Earthworks, you must bring us the medication in the pharmacy bottle bearing your child’s name, doctor’s name, and dosage. The medication will be administered to your child by the Earthworks Director. If your child needs to take over the counter medication while s/he is at Earthworks, please bring us a note describing how and when the child is to take it. It will be given to your child by the Earthworks Director. Any medication remaining at the end of the week will be returned to you on Friday.
Can I visit my child during the time s/he is at Earthworks?
While it would be fun to have parents join us for some of our activities, we nonetheless discourage it. Having a parent visit a child is often difficult for other children, and is even sometimes hard for the child being visited.
What if I need to pick my child up early?
Please send a note with your child in the morning. The staff will also have parent pick-up permissions on hand, should you forget to write a note.
What if someone other than a parent is going to collect my child from Earthworks?
We must have a note from a parent or guardian if your child is to be picked up by someone other than a parent, even if your child is carpooling with another family. Please understand that a phone call will not enable us to release your child to someone other than you: we must have your instructions in writing, for all-too-obvious and sad reasons.
What should I do if I still have questions?
Please feel free to call Earthworks (574.935.4164) with any questions. We want you to be fully informed about the program your child will be enjoying at Earthworks.
